Licensing for Arellia Products on SMP

Activating Symantec Issued Licenses

You can easily view the status of all installed licenses by opening the Arellia Security Manager console and navigating to Configuration > Settings > Arellia > Infrastructure > Product Licenses.

If after installation your Symantec issued license has a status of ActivationRequired you will need to Activate the license using the Arellia portal at http://portal.arellia.com.

Once you are logged in navigate to http://portal.arellia.com/License/Activate and follow the instructions. Activation involves copying your Symantec licence certificate text into a web page so that it can be re-issued. Once re-issued this new license can be installed using the Arellia Security Manager console.

Installing Arellia Licenses

Arellia licenses are installed through the Microsoft Management Console (MMC) Certificates snap-in for 6.x, 7.0, and 7.1 Arellia solution version.

Below are directions on getting the Certificates snap-in running in the MMC.

  1. Click Start > Run. Enter "MMC" and click OK.
  2. Once the MMC Console window opens, click File > Add/Remove Snap-in.
  3. The Add/Remove Snap-in window opens. Click the Add button.
  4. The Add Standalone Snap-in window opens. Click Certificates and Add.
  5. The Certificates snap-in window opens. Click Computer account and click Next.
  6. The Select Computer window opens. Click Local computer (the computer the console is running on) and click Finish.
  7. In the Add Standalone Snap-in window. Click Close.
  8. In the Console window under Console Root, expand the Certificates (Local Computer) item, select the folder Altiris Licensing (or in most cases the licenses could also be put in the Arellia Licensing folder; see the note at the beginning of this page).

Now the certificate snap-in is installed and available for use.

To Install Licenses

  1. To install a license, save the attachement to the email you received in a location available to the SMP server.  It must be saved with a .cer extension.  Please note the default extension the file is sent with is ._cer so this needs to be changed to .cer (remove the underscore.)
  2. Remove any old licenses by right click and selecting delete for the certificate of the Arellia product.
  3. Right click on the Arellia Licensing folder in the Certificates snap-in in the MMC (from the above directions) and select All Tasks and then Import.
  4. Browse to the certificate(s) saved from the email and select one.  Note:  If they are not saved with the .cer extension they will not show in the file find window.  If they do not appear in the file find window please either resave or change the file name to have the .cer extension.
  5. Click Next or Continue and the certificate will be installed and recognized by the SMP.
  6. Repeat steps 2-4 for another certificate.

Applying Licenses

In order for Arellia licenses to take effect, SMP services need to be restarted. The easiest option for licenses to be processed is to restart the server where the Symantec Management Platform Server is installed or:

  1. Recycle the Application Pools that the SMP server is using in the IIS Manager
  2. Stop the Altiris Object Host Service
  3. Restart the Altiris Service
  4. Start the Altiris Object Host Service.

If your file attachment (the .cer file) is denied by your email filter or client

  1. Copy just the text of the certificate from the email.  Just the actual certificate information as below from the beginning character to the end character of the certificate (It must of course include all the characters in the certificate.  A single missing or added character will invalidate the certificate). Do not include the Begin Certificate or the End Certificate notices.  NOTE:  The below text is not a valid certificate.

  1. Then open a new Notepad instance and paste in the information.
  2. Select Save or Save As and change the type from Text Document (*.txt) to All Files (*.*).
  3. Put in an appropriate name and end with the .cer extension as the example "LSS_10_1_2010.cer".
  4. This file can then be used in the MMC certificates plug-in as described about in this article.
