Some older programs might run poorly or not at all on a newer operating system. The Application Control Solution includes actions that can test whether applications in your environment are compatible with a new operating system, and can also apply compatibility fixes for [[actions apply the dynamic application of Microsoft Application Compatibility shims to a]] target applications.

Application Compatibility Testing - automatically finds and analyzes potential compatibility issues with the applications in your environment and helps create application compatibility policies that can be used to fix the application compatibility issues when the application runs on a newer operating system.

After analyzing Application Compatibility Testing logs and creating an elevation policy using the Adjust Application Compatibility wizard, which creates both the policy and the action, a new Application Compatibility action is created in the Application Compatibility folder.
Note
If you have legacy software running on Windows 7, then you will use the Application Compatibility action to allow that software to work without manual compatibility adjustments.
